Q: Jumping Genres: Ever pick up a book from a genre you usually don't like and LOVE it? Tell us about it and why you picked it up in the first place.

I like to do that. It's so much fun to read a book you normally wouldn't read. I already found some pearls among those books. It is a good thing to look outside the box you created for yourself. I started to read my first zombie book a year ago (Carrie Ryan) and since then, I'm hooked. When I was younger, I only read thrillers until I started in Harry Potter. I found a fantastic new world and now I can't imagine my world without fantasy books.
But the book that I especially want to pick is Mary E. Pearson - The adoration of Jenna Fox. I posted a review about this book not so long ago. I am not a fan of science fiction, but this was such a different twist to it and I fell in love with this book! The blurb sounded fascinating and that's what pushed me to read it.

But there are limits.. I don't like biographies, western, chick lit and some other things, and I don't touch them. I don't want to force myself into liking something and I never met a book that spoke 'read me!'

So what I want to tell you is: explore different genres! Try out other books. Just go to the library and find yourself something new (I'm not that rich, so I don't buy random books. I'm too picky for that) It can be so much fun. I must say that I don't do it a lot, because I enjoy the books I read now too much. But sometimes I feel like trying out something 'strange'.

Please leave your link, so I can see your pick!

  1. I have never read a zombie book o.O Do you think I should give it a try? I just find the eating brains thing so disgusting :)

I'm a new GFC follower, and here's my FF #2.

    Have a great weekend.

  2. Lexxie, if you read Carrie Ryan her books, it's not about eating brains :p they do want to eat your flesh though, haha. Perhaps you should try one! There is also the new one from Courtney Summers - This is not a test. I've been told that you don't get to know the zombies, but you do have the tension of them. Perhaps that's a good first try? And after that something with the real zombies in it? Thanks for the follow!

  3. I wish I could read books of different genres all the time. If I know I don't really, absolutely love the genre, then I'm inclined to set it back down or procrastinate reading it. Zombie books are included in the "setting back down on a library shelf" category, but I might go pick one up now. :D

  10. you're right, it's always amazing to try different genres of books. Even if it's not for us, there always have some exceptions.

  11. Hi Mel. It's nice when you pick something up you wouldn't normally and then find you love it. I picked up a graphic novel earlier this year and loved it. I always tend to go for the contemp romance genre but I really want to get a good Urban Fantasy. I think I'll try The Shadow Reader first and see how I like it.

  13. I ABSOLUTELY agree, Mel -- it's so much fun to read a book you normally wouldn't read, especially if you end up loving it! I've found so many of my favourites that way, and it spreads your blinders so you can look for more books like that you love :) Sci-fi is one I just got into, and zombie books too! And dystopian especially -- if I hadn't read the Hunger Games, where would I be? ;)

But like you, I totally draw the line at biographies and non-fiction LOL. I hope you have an amazing weekend, Mel! :) <3

  15. I read my first zombie book this year and I definitely want to read more!

I also don't touch biographies; the real world just doesn't interest me as much as fictional ones.

  16. I'm not a big zombie fan! I keep trying, but can't find one that just does it for me. Like Ryan's was a DNF for me. I'm determined...maybe one day I'll find one. ;)

The Adoration was one of the books I picked up after reading The Host. I loved it too!

  32. I like that message! I agree, you should try different genres. I just don't understand how people can buy books they've never heard anything about though. I've done it I admit, but also I've seen people buy whole series when they haven't read the first book! That's kind of ridiculous.

  33. I love zombie books! So fun! I've actually read some biographies that I really loved, though perhaps memoir would be the better word for them? There's a really good one called "Chinese Cinderella: The True Story of an Unwanted Daughter" that was so good, I finished it in about a day. Thanks for stopping by my blog! *old follower*
