Fairytale News | Why I love reading.

'Mel on reading' is a little feature I created as part of my Fairytale news. It's my way to show my thoughts on topics that go from pet peeves in reading to my favorite things in books.

I’m not sure if it’s just me, but I always find it hard to explain why I love to read. I truly believe I was born a reader and books complete my life. I’ve always been passionate about books and when I think about reading, my heart makes a happy jump and I get this warm, happy feeling. I’m proud to be a bookworm, so I’ve been thinking about it for a while and I’ve tried to come up with some reasons that makes reading important to me. The best way to show what I’m trying to say is using pictures that illustrate it. You can find all these pictures on my Pinterest board: “Reading is a way of life.”

1. I get to explore all these amazing worlds. It’s traveling without moving. What’s better than being able to site in a chair with your head in another world?

2. I make new friends with characters I can connect with, I can swoon over boys without troubles from the boyfriend (haha) and they are always there.
The best part? They will never judge you and they take you on their adventures.

3. Escaping reality. I love my life, but it’s sometimes wonderful to leave it behind to enjoy the comfort of another world. When I feel stressed, I love to forget that for a moment by diving into someone else’s life.

4. For a moment, I get to be someone else. I can be heroic and brave. I can be a total kick-ass.
Who doesn’t want to slay a dragon or be an assassin sometimes? We can be anything and anyone for a moment!

5. Not to forget that it’s scientific proven that reading has shown good effects on the brains and overall health!Just read this article and see for yourself: Benefits of reading. And that's only the beginning.

6. There is so much wisdom in books.
Reading showed me so many things I can use in real life. Some books are really a part of my life now, because they've showed & learned me valuable things.

7. I make friends all over the world.
This shy girl who is afraid of meeting new people, got to meet some Dutch booklovers – and we are now a book club!  I never imagined this would happen and I'm so happy about it!

So to make a long story short, reading is the best. How about you?

  1. I agree with all of your reasons for reading! Especially reason #3, I think that's pretty much the reason I started reading and then over time I loved everything else about it. I also love making new friends over shared mutual book love, it's the best feeling finding a friend who's just as an avid reader as you are! :)

  2. I totally agree! I think I've also always been a reader - I can't remember a single time in my life where reading hasn't been a huge part of how I define myself. I don't know if I love reading for the same reasons you do - though they are definitely liable reasons and ones that I do think a lot of people will agree with! - but I guess it doesn't matter much when a love of reading brings so many people together, right? :) Great post Mel!

    1. Yes, that's the best thing about reading! We all read for our own reasons and there are no good/bad reasons why you love it :D

  3. Number 3, 4 and 7 are the ones I can relate to the most, though I do agree with all of them! I also find it quite difficult to explain why I love reading sometimes, but these images do a great job. Thanks for sharing, Mel! :)

  6. Love this! I think getting to live so many lives and experience so many situations are my favorite parts. Escaping reality is nice too when you're having stressful weeks! <3

  7. Great post! I love my life too, but sometimes it's just nice to escape into the story of a book and forget your stress/worries. Love the images you chose for each one =)

  8. "The best part? They will never judge you and they take you on their adventures."--Haha. It's kinda funny though that we judge every step/move they make and they don't judge us back. Kind of hypocritical, but that's the way it is and I'm not complaining. I agree with meeting new characters and worlds! Gods. The worlds are sometimes the best. Like the one in Harry Potter? Magical! One can take so much from reading a book. I remember reading about stress relief and frustration--you can always act like you think your hero/heroine from a book/movie/real life would act and take some inspiration from them. Also, friends from all over the wordl--best.freaking.thing.everrrr!!! :) Love this post, cutipie!

  9. I agree with them all too. I stopped reading for a while but got right back to it and hope I NEVER do that again! I love "going" someplace else and "meeting" someone new in ever book I pick up. Awesome post, my friend!

  12. Totally agree that it's hard to put into words why I love to read but you've summed it up nicely here! It's a way to shut out the world when I need to, to learn about new places and meet new people, and it makes me happy even just being in a bookshop and surrounded by books I haven't read yet! :-)

  13. YES! Exactly this. I love reading because it's an escape, and I get to be whoever I want to be and go wherever I want to go, with NO limitations. I've lived hundreds of adventures through books!

  14. I love these! I empathize most with number 4. I started reading because I could be brave in the pages in ways that I couldn't be in real life. I was a pretty shy kid growing up, and there's nothing better being transported to another world where you feel more courageous.

  18. I think you hit the nail on the head! There's just something so calming about reading. It's one of the few things I can do that actually allow me to stop thinking about everything else and just be something more. Plus it's inspirational, healthy, and it makes you look smart! haha. ;)

    1. I've read somewhere in a news paper that people who read not only look smarter, but also sexier ;) so hey, double score!

  19. Oh, I love this. I think books are the greatest form of escapism that there is. How could anything compare to that?!

  20. I love this post! I am 100% there with you on the escaping reality one. Sometimes the best part of my day is when I get the kids to sleep, grab a glass of wine and get lost in a different world. Great post!

  21. "If reading makes us smarter, I'm on my way to Einstein status" hahaha TRUTH. I love all of your reasons. I am not sure how I became a reader. It's just always something I did and I truly believe that people who don't like reading haven't found the right book. But Number 3 is a big one for me. I like to get out of me head and unwind with a book.

    1. YES, exactly. I also think some people are deep down readers, but they just have more interest in other things.

  22. Oh, I love this, Mel! I like reading for all the same reasons, I'm always baffled when I find out people I know don't read. I was telling an author on Twitter the other day (as we were discussing the whole Sam Claflin doesn't read thing) that it's like seeing zoo animals on a city street, it's just too strange. ;)

I like the graphics you chose for the post, too.

  23. Fabulous. Two that really stand out for me are getting to swoon over all the awesome male characters and being brave, since I'm quite a chicken in real life :)

  24. I can't not agree with all of those! And it's true that reading makes us smarter. And cooler, because then we know more things than people who don't read, haha! I'm always really intrigued to know what people who don't read do. I mean, I only started reading seriously in 2010, but before that, my life was... not lonely or empty, but definitely not as good as it is now. Books are my favorite entertainment, so when someone tells me they don't read, I always think, "How sad your life must be", hahaha.

  25. Ditto Mel! 2,3,6... Wait..,they're ALL my favorite reasons too! :) I feel like there are so many perks to reading, I don't know what I'd do without my love to books! What a drab existence.. hehee
I really love the wisdom of books, swooning over boys, and character friends...and escaping reality is probably my top reason ;)

  26. I so love this post!! I too believe I was born a reader. I've always been obsessed with books and there is no better feeling than when I get a whole stack of new books!! Before I could read I used to bug EVERYONE that came into my house to read to me and I was also big on those books on tape you follow along with. It's such an escape. Not that I have anything big to escape from, I just love going on an adventure in someone else's life. There is nothing like reading... nothing!

  28. Your Pinterest boards are the best. Reading a way of life YES YES YES. In all truth, I don't explain why I read to people. The only person who's ever needed an explanation is one of my brothers who's one of those people who doesn't read.

I love all these graphics and I'm very tempted now to go through your entire board to find all these different quote posters :D :D.
