'Mel on reading' is a little feature I created as part of my Fairytale news. It's my way to show my thoughts on topics that go from pet peeves in reading to my favorite things in books.
I think we've all seen these things before. People are being plagiarized, authors are behaving badly, nasty comments, I think there is quite a list with negative situations. The thing is, aren’t we supposed to be one big, happy family? We have one of the best thing in life in common: our love for the written word. Whether we are readers who appreciate books or authors who create these wonderful stories, we have the same passion. Please, let us remember the important things!
1. There is no right or wrong way to blog. Don't ever let anyone make you feel like you should change your way of blogging. If you feel good with posting two times a month, keep it that way! It's your blog and you should do what makes you feel happy and proud.
2. This brings me to the fact that we should be kind to each other; we should respect each other and value different opinions. If someone doesn’t like a book you love, there are two things you could do: you could leave a normal comment or you could turn around and leave the review. It’s perfectly fine to share your thoughts and say that you loved it, but bashing and saying that the blogger is wrong is NOT okay. Don’t act like your opinion is right. Everyone reads a book in their own way and there will be thousands of people with other opinions.
4. The last thing I want to tackle is plagiarism. If you steal someone’s work; if you intentionally use things that aren’t yours, you are horrible. Be ashamed of yourself! Bloggers put a lot of time and effort in their content (or other things they make for their blog). Copy pasting their work is one of the worst things you could possible do. Getting inspiration from someone is great, but link back and give credits! It’s not hard or time consuming and you show respect for the original idea.
So, I’m getting out of my preachy mood and I want to sprinkle some unicorns and rainbows. Let’s all just be glad that we share this special thing with each other. It makes me sad that there are people out there who are rotten and who spoil the beauty of the community. Let’s be kind to each other.
Bloggers who also tackle some problems:
Snuggly Oranges talk about stalker behaviour from authors on Twitter.
Gypsy Reviews has a reminder that you must blog the way you want.
And Effortlessly Reading has written a letter to people who plagiarize.
