Top 10 Tuesday 34. Cover love/hate.

Admit it: we all like to buy books with pretty covers. Today I'm sharing you all kinds of covers that make me want to buy a book - and two that make me want to run the other way. I forgot to include links to Goodreads, but I will update it later on.

My number one covers: artwork/illustrations! I love looking at detailed covers with pretty drawings.

I also love kick-ass looking girls on the cover. Swords, cross-bows, fierce faces, yes!

But I also always fall for covers with pretty dresses. I just.. like it.

Fantasy covers. I love almost every fantasy cover. There is just something about them..

Two trends I really don’t care for are faces from girls and New adult covers.

That's it. What are your picks this week?

  1. Minimalist covers are my thing, because I love how abstract they are. Plus they're usually a lot more subtly relevant to the story (instead of, say, a romance novel with people kissing on the cover). The minimalist things give things away, but not too much.

  2. OOh nice topics! I totally forgot the fairytale esque covers or even colorful ones!

I'm 50/50 on the face books. It really just depends on what the face looks like and how its presented as representation for the novel. So yeah, 50/50 on a book by book basis! ;)

    Here's my Tuesday Post

    Have a GREAT day!

  3. I think I'd like to design book covers for my next career. Wouldn't that be fun?

Here's my list of things I like about book covers.

  4. Covers with pretty dresses aren't always appealing to me anymore because I am so tired of seeing them but the ones you featured, ahh they are all so gorgeous and I actually have some of those books on my TBR so yay for that! :D

I hate covers with faces. There are a handful of exceptions but on the whole I cannot stand them .-.

    Fantastic list, Mel! :)

    1. Some dress covers are cliché, but some are just.. so pretty! I want those dresses, haha, even when I have no occasion to wear them.

  5. lol, you HAVE to forgive me, but you do start off your post saying "we all love to buy boys with pretty covers"...I laughed quite weirdly there. Hehe. BUT BACK TO YOUR POST. *ahem* Yes, yes, I do absolutely adore minimalist covers. They're my favourites. Like Rainbow Rowell? She consistently scores the best simplistic covers there is! Illustrations also rock in my opinion. :)

    1. HAHA, thanks for telling me *quickly edits mistake*

  6. The Wizard's Promise is so interesting, I'd frame that one. Illustrations catch my eye because they usually look like someone put time and thought into the design, versus the faces/NA covers. Those just make me sigh.

  7. I love minimalistic covers too!

    Great list! Here's my TTT

  8. That cover for Stray is GORGEOUS. There is something so haunting about it. I really like all of your choices - illustrations, minimalist, and colorful ones are favorite trends of mine as well!

  9. I ADORE the cover for "The Perilous Sea," and it was the same with "The Burning Sky." I love the focus on the elements and how swirly and pretty the covers are!

I like the poses and the overall feel of the Throne of Glass covers, but I've never liked that Calaena looked blue on them. She's not blue. Is she a smurf? What's happening here?

    1. I never really noticed that! Interesting.. To me it looks more gray-ish, I guess they tried to make a contrast with the background?

  10. I agree I don't think there have been many New Adult covers that I've loved. I also really like minimalism!! And creepy, I'm into that! Great list!

  11. Pretty gowns are a turn off for me, also faces on the cover.

  12. Face/people and NA covers are not my thing either. (Though there are a few rare exceptions...) I absolutely love covers like A Thousand Pieces of You and while I'm very picky I do fall in love with dress covers occasionally (The Cinderella Moment)

  13. The face covers have become very popular lately. It use to be all we could get was a girl in a dress then that moved to up close faces of the models. I don't love the face covers either.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yay for pretty illustration! Shadow and Bone would definitely top my list as well if I did TTT :p It's always refreshing to see a unique cover that represents the book well.

And the cover for A Thousand Pieces of You is GORGEOUS I LOVE IT. I would buy it if it's a matter of cover but I'm not sure about the story since I've read another work by the same author and it didn't turn out so well...

  15. I love so many of these things as well! Creepy, colorful, kickass women. I'm also a sucker for a girl in a fancy dress cover. I know it's played out but I love it!

  17. Oh my gosh, yes! We have a lot the same, no surprise ;) THOSE COVERS *drools* I love the girls covers, especially Crown of Midnight. I can't stop staring at my copy of Heir of Fire. The two you hate just need to DIE.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Grave Mercy is a fantastic cover, very striking! Plus the story inside is wonderful too :)

Yeah, I wish the cover designers would get more creative with New Adult covers. Unfortunately they all look really similar.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Oh, yes, the illustrated, kick-ass girls, and minimalist covers...I love all of those. And I hate the faces. Just no. Let me figure out what the character looks like, thank you very much. :)

  20. Yes, I agree with you on these covers! To be honest, it seems that everyone hates the girl-in-a-dress covers, but they are so pretty, I honestly would buy the book if that was the case. NO SHAME, RIGHT? And my favorite types of covers HAVE to be the one with pretty graphics/typography, like Fangirl or Falling Into Place. I also agree with you on the New Adult covers (they are ALL THE SAME. OMG), and the ones with faces on them. Some of them are just creepily uncomfortable. Lovely post, Mel! Thanks for sharing :)

  21. I have to agree with you on your cover picks Mel, I love covers with girls with pretty dresses on it, also covers with kickass MC's such as Grave Mercy and Crown of Midnight! And the NA covers that you've picked don't really work for me either. There are a few that I've really liked such as Holier than Thou by Laura Buzo and Come Back to Me by Mila Gray!

  22. Definitely love the minimalist and colorful cover! Especially that A Thousand Pieces of You! Definitely a major swoon 0-0

  23. Minimalist, pretty dresses and illustrated/artsy covers are all on my list too! I never even thought about fantasy or fairy tale covers but I totally agree - they are always beautiful! :)

  24. Ack. SO MANY gorgeous covers :) I'm in love with many of them, hih. <3 Especially Winterspell. Sigh. I need you to read this book. I loved it so much :D And I really hope you will too. <3 Thank you for sharing Mel :)

  25. Ok so ALL THE COVERS you featured as liking are some of my favorite covers in life! Shadow and Bone, Poison, Grave Mercy, Crown of Midnight (and ALL the Throne of Glass books to be honest) Scarlet, The Jewel, Stitching Snow, Winterspell, A Thousand Pieces of You, those Seven Realms covers, Snow Like Ashes and Gates of Thread and Stone ♥♥♥ Like you I love my fantasy-looking covers, colourful covers and ones with fierce warrior women front and center! Artwork and illustrated covers are among my favorites too! I also agree on NOT being a fan of covers with faces. Close ups of random faces are just a turn off for me. And their some cover artists idea of what the MC would look like which likely doesn't match up with the author's vision anyways! I'd much rather just imagine my own faces thank you very much! Fantastic post and picks Mel ♥

  26. Agreed! New adult covers do tend to all look the same to me. And you're totally right about fairy tale adaptation covers: they're all beautiful. Did you see The Glass Casket cover? Breathtaking. I love the Stray cover as well. So good.

  27. oooh i REALLY LOVE the minimalistic covers!! So simple yet so beautiful as well! A Thousand Pieces of You is SO GORGEOUS! Great picks, Mel! All of those look super pretty!!

  28. I agree with all your likes except the pretty dresses ones. I make exceptions to that one cause sometimes they are awesome.

I also hate faces and the NA covers - yuck.

    ReplyDelete
  29. We have very similar tastes! Artwork/illustrations and minimalist covers are my favorites. I also love color. And I can do without most face and new adult covers although I do love the cover of Sins & Needles. :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Illustrated covers are also number one for me, as well!! I'm not sure why... maybe because they tend to be more intricate than covers with model girls on them? And YES, I am SO not a fan of covers with faces and NA covers. If I were to ever read the books with bad covers you showcased above, I would for sure get them in ebook.

    1. I think it's because it looks like they put more effort in it than, let's say, a cover with a face on it.

  31. I love illustrated covers and kick-a girls!!!! Girls in pretty dresses are.. well, gorgeous to look at. But I also want the dress to make sense and appear in the book, you know? I don't mind looking at gorgeous things though :D Sometimes minimal and simplicity is just the best thing :) Haha! Creepy-looking is where we differ. I don't want to look at them. AT ALL. Colourful and fantasy are some of the best!!! *stares at the Claudia Gray and Sherry Thomas's covers* And yep. Most NA covers aren't my cup of tea and the girls' faces.. well.. *yawns*

    1. Yes! When the dress they wear on the cover is described in the book, SCORE :D

  32. Omg so true, I just love all fantasy covers, haha. I'm SOOOO excited for Dreamer's Pool! *hops around*

  33. I love any hand-drawn or covers featuring illustrations. They're always so pretty, and it's even mroe of a bonus if there's lovely hand-lettering. I also love typography-based covers too. And yes to kick-ass looking girls.

  34. WAIT. Stray is a fairy tale?! -immediately adds to TBR list-
And yes, I love creepy looking covers and colorful covers!
Agreed, who needs those face covers? -shudders-

  35. It feels like such a cliche, but I'm such a sucker for the pretty dress covers! It's just so... pretty! Hah. :)
