Mel in Movieland: introduction.

I talked about this in my discussion post ‘Other content’ and I took the decision to go for it. It was very important to me to find a way to combine movies with books. I’ve been trying to work this out and here is a little sneak peek for some posts: Disney project –> Snow White in combination with book retellings and other movies, Into the storm (movie) with disaster books and I have several ideas that include animation movies like my favorite movies with non-Disney princesses.

I thought it might be fun to show you the rating scale I will be using. They are not spectacular, but I’m satisfied with the result. The ‘exit’ button is for the movies with a 1 out of 5 rating or even a ‘DNF’ because yes, that happens. The ‘movie premier’ button is for the special movies; my favorites. The ones I want to re-watch right away.

I have never written a movie review before, but I’m trying to think of an easy way and I've come up with these aspects: casting, music, special effects, story and ending. It’s definitely a completely different approach then writing a book review. It’s fun, but it will takes some time before I’ve found a way that works for me. I hope you will keep this in mind!

For now I’ve planned to do one/two Mel in Movieland posts every month. It takes more time to write these posts and I don’t want to overwhelm my blog with other content. We will see if this new feature is a success or a failure, but I’ve had a lot of fun coming up with post ideas so far.

Fun fact: I'm going to shorten the name in the title into 'MIM' which is also a Disney character you might know from The sword in the stone.

Do you have any suggestions or things you would like to see?

  5. I've been thinking about trying to incorporate movie reviews into my blog for some time because before I got back into reading, movies were a huge part of my free time. But you're right about movie reviews being so different to write! I find it really difficult, but I think the categories you've split your reviews into work. For me, I think the biggest thing is that movies are mostly audible, a lot of the story is told through dialogue, and I'm more of a visual person; when I'm listening to things, like with audiobooks, I just don't seem to absorb it as much as I do when I'm reading it. Maybe that's why I find it so difficult to write a review for movies!

I think you've found the perfect rating scale! I love the exit sign for DNFs/1 stars!

  8. This sounds like such a great idea! :D I can't wait to see some of your movie reviews. And may I just point out that those ratings are so amazing. Very unique. (: Will you be doing a large range of movies or only a specific kind?

    1. I hope to focus mainly on fantasy and animation movies, since that matches my blog, but I'm also hoping to review other types of movies like Into the storm. As long as I can find a way to combine it with books :D

  9. Movie reviews are really cool!! And, I mean it sounds bad, but when I see a movie review raving about how good it was...it's easier to watch the movie than, for instance, read a book after a rec. ;) Although I do read way more books than I watch movies. STILL. I'm excited for this!

    1. I think it's because movies are shorter and take less time. A book feels like a bigger commitment to me!

  10. I love those little rating symbols! Especially the exit one xD I don't think I've ever watched a movie that made me walk out of a theater... except maybe Chronicle. That was just weird, and probably the reason I stayed because I wanted to figure out why it was so freaky.

I'm looking forward to all your posts!

Looking forward to your new feature!

  12. This is a great idea Mel! Especially with how you plan to connect it with books. It's great to pair some books with films because I often feel like staying in the mindset a good book puts me in, and a film can help with that! I look forward to your thoughts on Into the Storm too, which I haven't had a chance to see even though I dearly love Richard Armitage. :)

  16. This is so exciting Mel!! I'm thrilled you decided to go forward with this idea and you'll likely be my inspiration when I attempt to mesh tv and film into my blog as well :D I can't wait to read your reviews already!! YAY!

  17. Yay! I'm so glad you're doing this! I love that you're really combining them with books, and not just doing movies reviews in general, as I've seen a lot of other people do. That should be a lot of fun! :D I can't wait to read the first one!

  18. What a cute rating scale! I'm glad that you decided to give the other content a go while still trying to link it to books somehow. I've written SO many book reviews that I figured it'd be easy to give feedback on other products, but it's really not. I guess practice makes perfect. Good luck!

  19. I love the sound of this! :D Can't wait to see the movies you'll be featuring, Mel, and I love the reviewing format you'll be using. Because yes, no movie is complete without music and usually that's the aspect that's totally forgotten about.

That rating system is also super adorable <3 Looking forward to the first post!

  21. Oh yay! I did a couple of movie reviews with similar aspects (effects, score, casting), and it's something I would love to see on other blogs! I wanted to do them more - along with manga reviews - for some variety on the blog, but it never really stuck. I'll review movies from time to time if they're book related, or a movie I feel very passionate about (Pacific Rim!), but other than that I just...don't. Maybe because for me to write a really spot-on review I need to write everything down or I forget things that I need to talk about! I considered writing a review for a movie I saw a couple days ago called Oculus. It was really awesome! I've just been too lazy to write it >.< Looking forward to this new feature, Mel!

  22. YES so in love with the feature button and your super cute ratings!! I can see how a movie review would be a different beast from a book review. I'm excited for your reviews though! I actually don't watch a lot of movies because I usually don't know what's out there to see, so I almost always default to a tv show. So this will be good because you can tell me what's what ^^

  24. I am really excited for this! Can't wait to see the posts. I do movie reviews, and I really enjoy doing them. But I don't make enough effort to combine the two together. I am very excited to see this start up, I know the posts are going to be great.
