Top 10 Tuesday 37. Underrated books.

Top Ten Underrated Authors or Books in X genre.

I don’t think it will surprise you that the genre I picked is ‘Fairytales and Fantasy.’ There are definitely a lot of YA books popular in this genre, like Throne of glass & Shadow and bone, but I also have a feeling some other gems are overlooked. So today I want to spotlight 5 fairytales and 5 fantasy books I feel are underrated.

Tiger Lily is one of my all time favorite retellings. The writing-style, the POV, the way the story unravels and the heart-breaking ending. It’s beautiful.

I think most of us know Scarlet from Marissa Meyer’s series The Lunar Chronicles, but what about fierce Scarlet from this Robin Hood retelling?

If you follow me for a while you might know that Marillier is one of my favorite authors. She was one of the first to introduce me to strong, female characters and I’ll treasure her books forever. This is a Celtic retelling of The six swans. I also recommend Heart’s blood (Beauty and the beast) and Wildwood dancing (Twelve dancing princesses)

There was some hype around Cruel Beauty when it was published, but after that I feel the attention has died a little. I absolutely loved this story and it’s one of my favorite books from 2014.

Breadcrumbs blew me away with it’s writing-style and it’s a mash-up of all the awesome things I look for in a book.

The best transition to go from fairytales to fantasy is this book.8113512
Poison is an adorable story with a nice fairytale-feeling to it. It has an adorable pig, a cute guy and a strong girl.

Who would have thought that trolls could be so attractive and sarcastic? I love the banter and magical world that Danielle created in Stolen Songbird.

And because it’s my TTT, I decided to highlight three fantastic fantasy books that deserve all the attention according to me. I just want to make sure everyone is aware of my love for the series.

If you love a book with good character development, The girl of fire and thorns is something for you. Elisa has such a transformation in this series, going from the overweight girl to someone confident with herself. Not to forget.. HECTOR. I thought it was a good idea to spotlight this series, seeing the novella’s are now bound in a book called ‘The girl of fire and thorns stories.’

I recently finished World After and I couldn’t believe it took me so long to get started in this series. It’s going to be horrible to wait for the sequel. Dark, gory and action-packed, Angelfall will change the way you look at Angels forever.

15814555
This is easily one of my favorite series EVER. Action-packed, strong female assassins, swoon-worthy well-balanced romance, character development; it has everything you could ever ask for. I’m happy to highlight this series for the upcoming Mortal Heart, which is an amazing conclusion. Dark Triumph is the best one in my opinion. You have to meet Sybella & Beast, but Ismae and Duval from Grave Mercy are also precious to me.

If you haven’t read these books, PLEASE, do it. You won’t regret it.

  2. Oh love love love!! I LOVE Tiger Lily!!! One of my fave reads of that year! Also adored Angelfall! Cruel Beauty was a fave too! Still need to read A Stolen Songbird but it's in the TBR mountain!

    Here's my Tuesday Post

    Have a GREAT day!

  3. I am love with the quote you choose from Daughter of the Forest! I haven't read it, but maybe I will some day because I loved Marillier's Caller trilogy. :)

Lol! That quote from Angelfall is one of my faves, so funny. xD

Ooh, Grave Mercy <3 I can't wait for the final book in the trilogy, so excited!

    1. I haven't read her new series yet, but her older work is so worth it!

  4. I absolutely adore that quote from Angelfall! I'm giggling remembering it. XD That one is definitely underrated. I wonder if it's because the series sort of just dropped off for ages there?! Isn't book #3 coming out next year? Fingers crossed. I hope so! I love fairy tale retellings but I honestly haven't read many. I think Jackson Pearce and AG Howard and Marissa Meyer are the real "names" for retellings and the other ones get lost. I've heard of Scarlet but never even seen reviews. I think Marissa Meyer's Scarlet ALWAYS comes to mind first.

  5. So many good books on here! Grave Mercy is so good, but Dark Triumph is my favorite too. I'm eagerly anticipating Mortal Heart. I also need to just buy Stolen Songbird online because I keep searching in indie stores to no avail. I wants to read that book! And, I finished Daughter of the Forest over the weekend. My goodness. I loved that book -- flew through the entire thing. I know I'll be reading it again! I've already started the second book in the series.

  6. I love the book 'Poison' - it's just so much fun to read. I just wish the author could have written more books, her passing is such a shame but at least she left us a wonderful book.

a new reader here, just want to say hello, hope you have a great day.

  7. Seriously need to read Stolen Songbird! I've seen it on quite a few TTT lists this week!
And asdlfkaef Cruel Beauty. That was such a beautiful book- I loved how it incorporated fairytale retelling with Greek mythology :)

  8. Cruel Beauty and Angelfall are already on my list! I love your suggestions - they all sound fantastic! Thanks for sharing :)

  10. Now that you mention it, Cruel Beauty really has kind of disappeared on all the blogs I read after the initial freakout when it was published. I actually have that on my TBR pile for this month or the next month, so I'm really glad to hear you loved it.

I completely agree about Angelfall! The wait for book 3 is killing me...

  11. *applauds*

This list is made of "YES." I LOVE Grave Mercy, Cruel Beauty, Angefall and I read Daughter of the Forest when I was young. That was a lot more mature than I was expecting at the time.

I have Scarlet on my nook but I haven't gotten to it yet, I probably should soon!

  12. Eeek, kind of ashamed that I've only read one book on this list -- Angelfall -- but the rest are books I REALLY want to check out, so that counts, right? :P

    1. Tiger Lily: Okay, so I've heard literally nothing but amazing things for this book. Even though I read Jodi Lynn Anderson's latest novel, The Vanishing Season, and didn't like it all that much (way to bland and boring for my taste), everyone is telling me to forget about that and just read Tiger Lily already. And I've heard that TL features a very different and twisted Neverland, so I'm looking forward to that. It's encouraging to know that this was one of your ultimate favs!

    2. Scarlet: I actually didn't know this was a Robin Hood retelling, but that only makes me 10x more excited, since I don't think I've seen such a retelling around before. Also, I have to admit that for some reason I was never really attracted to this book, but I definitely am now. :)

    4. Cruel Beauty: I... still have the galley of this one from last year. *hides face* Horrible reading priorities aside, I'm really looking forward to reading this one, after hearing so many rave reviews and after seeing that it was one of your favorite books this year, too! You're one of my most trusted reviewers, so I'll love whatever you enjoyed as well. Of course, I can't resist that gorgeous, gorgeous cover.

    6. Poison: Hm, so far the reviews I've seen for this have been pretty mixed, which is why I'm still not sure if I should give this a go. I dunno, it sounds a little too "young" for me? Which is a totally stupid mindset, I know, but I tend to prefer darker stories, so I'm just afraid that this might turn out to be too MG-ish for my liking. I suppose I need a little light-hearted stuff everyone once in a while, though, lol.

    8. The Girl of Fire and Thorns: Agh! I've been so caught up with the Shadow & Bone series lately (even though I finished Ruin & Rising about a month ago... What can I say, I'm a long-term fangirl!) that I haven't been thinking much about the other awesome YA fantasy books I need to get to. Character development is a must in my opinion, so I'm glad to hear that this book had plenty of that! All the more reason to read it, eh?

    9. Angelfall: Haha, I remember the review you wrote for this. It was definitely something new, and probably one of the only angel books I ever really enjoyed. And also, I was SO relieved when there was no romance between Raffe and Penryn. Even though plenty of people were moaning about the huge chemistry between them, I just felt that their relationship wasn't quite ready for any romance yet... Can't wait to read World After!

Great TTT list, Mel! And thanks for reminding me of all the books I still need to get to. xD

    1. 1. The vanishing season is NOTHING compared to Tiger Lily <3
      2. Yeay!
      4. I think you will like this, Meg.
      6. It's perhaps a bit young, but SO much fun.
      8. You should give it a try for sure!

  13. I've read Cruel Beauty, Stolen Songbird and Angelfall - but I own them all except Breadcrumbs so I definitely plan to get around to reading the rest!

  14. I can't wait to read Cruel Beauty, someone recommended it to me but I'll still have to buy it, maybe in an ebook form? Anyways, besides that I only know Angelfal from your list and I really want to read that one as well, the only reason I haven't bought it yet it's because it's so short and I always end up buying the longer books.
I haven't heard about Juliet Marillier but I checked out her retellings and now I can't wait to read them. :))
    Wonderful list!

  15. YES to The Girl of Fire and Thorns series. I love that series SO HARD. I didn't love Cruel Beauty, though. That may be partially due to the narrator, however, who I found to be overly dramatic and hokey. I don't usually listen to audiobooks, and this experience reminded me why. Glad you liked it, though!

  16. I've yet to read Grave Mercy :OOO I always knew I was forgetting something....(I have a tangible TBR which I pay no care to...and then I have the mental one kept in my mind which can be unreliable...)

I must reverse this and be in the loop! Great post, Mel!

  17. Eep, so many faves!! :D I love Daughter of the Forest! My mum owned it and I picked it from her shelf one day - never regretted it! Grave Mercy and Scarlet are also among my favorites :) And I loved Cruel Beauty.
And it seems I really need to read Angelfall. I think I bought it near the end of 2013 and it's still on my shelf, unread *hangs head in shame*
    Anyway, awesome list!

  18. Tiger Lily, Scarlet, Stolen Songbird. Cruel Beauty, Fire & Thorns, Angelfall and Grave Mercy are ALL on the tbr shelf - I actually own Stolen Songbird, Cruel Beauty, Fire and Thorns, Grave Mercy AND Angelfall if you can imagine...I just need to read the freaking thingd xD I HAVE read Poison though and I loved it too :D Awesome picks Mel ^^

  19. Love love love Scarlet and Stolen Songbird! And I read Cruel Beauty in a day, it was so dark and magnetically charming. This is a great list! I bought Daughter of the Forest years and years ago, I really need to read it. I have Tiger Lily on my shelf too. And I've never heard of Breadcrumbs but it sounds amazing! Fairy tale retellings are my favorite.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Totally agree with you about Stolen Songbird! Why are more people not reading and loving that book??

  21. Great genre idea! I really want to try Cruel Beauty, Poison, and Breadcrumbs. Thanks for sharing!

  22. I ❤ TIGER LILY SO MUCH! One of the best books I've ever read. It's so saddening that Jodi Lynn's books are all so underread because they're all so gorgeous, unique and beautiful.

While I didn't like Angelfall or Cruel Beauty as much as you did, I did really enjoy them and found them worthwhile overall.

Thanks for sharing Mel, and great choices! <3

  23. Well I have heard of almost all of these but I have only read Grave Mercy which is a shame because you seem to really love all of these. I'll have to look further into Marillier because I have never even heard of her work before.
    Thanks for the great list!

  24. You have such great selections on your list this week! Cruel Beauty is amazing, and I've added Tiger Lily to my TBR after reading your post! And that is my absolute FAVORITE quote from Angelfall! I bought Grave Mercy months ago and haven't read it yet, but you have me really eager to get started on it. Fantastic list this week! Thanks for stopping by my blog earlier :)

  25. I just added Scarlet :) I love retellings lately, and ROBIN HOOD! YESSS!! Cruel Beauty is on my wishlist too but I was waiting for the hype to calm down so I could forget what everyone said about it and enjoy the story for myself. I need to pick this one up soon :) I really, really want to read The Girl of Fire and Thorns as well. Actually I just want to add your entire list to my TBR if it's not already on there haha. Thanks for the suggestions Mel !!!

  26. I cannot agree more about Cruel Beauty and Angelfall. They both deserve so much more acknowledgement because they are both so fabulous. I still need to read my copy of Scarlet--which sounds so very awesome and Poison! I want to read that one as well.

Thanks for the list, Mel! <33

  27. YOU HAVE SOME OF MY FAVORITE BOOKS ON THIS LIST! Tiger Lily, Scarlet, Cruel Beauty, Poison, Angelfall, Stolen Songbird and Grave Mercy are all amazing and deserve all of the love in the world!! I guess that means I need to read Breadcrumbs and Daughter of the Forest (that latter of which has been collecting dust on my TBR - whoops!)

  28. A few of these are on my want-to-read list!

I don't know if I'd classify Angelfall as underrated; I picked it up mainly because I'd heard so much hype about it! I was pleasantly surprised, because I hadn't had much luck with self-published books. I guess it could be considered underrated in that it didn't have the power of a publishing house's marketing department behind it; it was pretty much word of mouth that grew its popularity.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I really want to check out Angelfall . I've heard do many great things about it. I'm Also king of curious about Scarlet as well. Great picks!

  33. Great choices, Mel! I love so many of these. Everyone needs to read Angelfall, Grave Mercy, and Fire and Thorns - no questions asked! I definitely plan on binge reading Scarlet when the third book is released, and I hope to read Daughter of the Forest at some point.

  34. Heck. Yes. I've read about five of the books on this list and completely agree that they all deserve more attention, some of these are my favorites :D Like Grave Mercy and Tiger Lily! I own a few on this list I haven't yet read, guess I'm in for a treat :)

  35. Oh wow, oh WOW! I am so in love with the way you decided to put this post together - featuring a quote for each underrated book in a pretty font. Each and every one of those quotes has piqued my interest and here's the apart where I have to admit something I am ashamed of - I've actually only read two books from this list! So yes, I think you're definitely right that these books are underrated and flew under the radar - and now they're calling to me <3

  36. Cruel Beauty and Stolen Songbird are my top favorite reads of 2014 and I agree with you, they need more credit and publicity. Rae Carson's Girl fo Fire and Thorns trilogy probably has the most hype from all the books on your list but I too enjoyed it. I actually met Rae 8 times and she is Amazing! I'm excited for her new trilogy :)

I love the layout of your Blog!! So pretty.

  37. Ooh, one of my favourite genres but sadly one in which I have fallen behind in reading. I looooove the Grave Mercy books, so major high five for including them! And Poison was adorable and I do think it deserved some more buzz. I definitely need to read Tiger Lily, the Girl of Fire and Thorns books, and the Scarlet books... all of which I own, just haven't gotten to yet. I will! I promise! :)

  38. One of my favorite historical fiction books is on this list! I love love loved Scarlet, and I have Lady Thief but just haven't gotten around to finishing it yet. I just love how different it's written, and Rob is so great.

My favorite thing about Angelfall is the slow burn romance. It's like it isn't as important as everything else that's going on but it still exists, and I love it. I just want more, actually.

Oh gosh there are so many books on this list I really need to read!
