Personal | TBR pile tag.

TBR pile
I was tagged by Sana from artsy musings of a bibliophile to do this tag a lot time ago, so you can all laugh at me and my methods to tackle my never-ending, always growing TBR pile. I tried to find the creator from this tag, but I couldn’t find anything.

HOW DO YOU KEEP TRACK OF YOUR TBR?
I use a Goodreads shelf called ‘owned-tbr’ and when I finish a book I move it to my ‘owned’ shelf. Lately I’ve been using my boyfriend’s apartment to stack most of the books from my TBR pile. Here are some of the books I plan to read soon:

IS YOUR TBR MOSTLY PRINT OR EBOOKS?
Print. I don’t like to buy a lot of ebooks, because I always want a print if I love the book and that’s more expensive than buying the print right away. E-books also don't end up on my 'owned' list, because I don't feel I truly own them. Does that make any sense?

HOW DO YOU DETERMINE WHICH BOOK FROM YOUR TBR TO READ NEXT?
That is a very random process. I read several books at the same time. For my TBR pile: I’m a mood reader, so first I decide what genre I want to read (which is most of the times fantasy/fairytales anyway) and then I look at my stacks and pick the book I want to read. For my review TBR pile I try to look at my Excel file, but I don’t always stick to my schedule. Here is a sneak peek for 2015;

A BOOK THAT HAS BEEN ON YOUR TBR THE LONGEST?
According to Goodreads: Joy Preble – Dreaming Anastasia

A BOOK YOU RECENTLY ADDED TO YOUR TBR?
The Scholastic box set from Harry Potter and Fairest by Marissa Meyer (both are on their way to me)

A BOOK IN YOUR TBR BECAUSE OF ITS BEAUTIFUL COVER?
Amanda Sun – Ink. I really like the soft colors.

A BOOK IN YOUR TBR THAT YOU NEVER PLAN ON READING?
To be honest, there are several books that I never plan to read. I gave a lot of them away already, because my book taste has changed over time. There is one that really surprises me though. I have no idea why I bought it. Phyllis Reynolds Naylor – Incredibly Alice. It’s also book 23 in a series I’ve never heard of? So this one is on my pile for the secondhand bookstore.

AN UNPUBLISHED BOOK IN YOUR TBR THAT YOU’RE EXCITED FOR?
I can’t answer this. Do you know how many books I’m waiting for? I have an Excel file to keep track of all the books I want to add to my  physical TBR pile and I pile all the unpublished books in my 'not-published-yet' Goodreads shelf.

A BOOK IN YOUR TBR THAT EVERYONE RECOMMENDS TO YOU?
P.C Cast & Kristin Cast – Marked. HAHA. Just kidding. I’ve heard a lot of good things about These broken stars.

NUMBER OF BOOKS IN MY TBR?According to Goodreads: physical copies: 343. Woops? TBR one day: 2717.

  1. 343?! Whoa. I don't even think I own that many books. I tend to accept eARCs more because for the main thing, I don't have to look at them all the time in shame. I still have a bunch of physicals I haven't read and it honestly HAUNTS me because it's like "NOVA? DON'T YOU LOVE ME? WHY WON'T YOU READ ME?" I'm weird, I know.

This looks like so much fun and I love that you have an Excel file to keep track of your books.

    1. Haha, poor books! It all started with one Excel file, but Debby (Snuggly Oranges) made me addicted to them after she showed her amazing system.

  2. Wow, you are so organized with your TBR what with your spreadsheets to keep track of your books and such. All I do is throw all my TBR books onto my Goodreads to-read list. :D AHHHH!!! Fairest!!! I need that book in my life right about now.

    1. Haha, I do love to use Goodreads to keep track of all the books I want to read :D

  3. Same with Ana haha. I don't really do such things on my tbr and I let myself read in a whim. I tried doing the listing thing but continuously failed due to some external factors (this sounded like a lab report haha). Anyway, I am so excited to read Dangerous Girls too! 343!! Wooop woop. I am 200 something and I don't know if I'll ever tackle all of those books :D. Goodluck with your tbr, Mel! :D

  4. I need to get organized like you! I have a small stack on the floor by my bookshelf of physical books I own and need to read. My goodreads "want to read" shelf is just anything I see that catches my fancy. My amazon wishlist is those I'm really dying to get. Other than that I just read by mood!

  5. I totally understand about not feeling like you own e-books, and I only tend to buy them when they're on REALLY good sale/it's an author or title I'm unsure about. Books that I KNOW I'll love I always get a hard copy. I just love owning it, holding it, and displaying the cover art on my shelves. I also love your Else POP figure! :)

    1. Exactly! I want to put it on the shelves if I love it :)

  6. lol! I did this tag awhile ago, it was so fun. IDK how you made yours so short. Anyway, that jab about the Casts made me laugh but I feel guilty too because I still read that series ( HOW CAN I NOT AFTER INVESTING 8 BOOKS ALREADY?!?!) i guess I could if I wasn't ocd about finishing series more than a few books in.
I read Ink last year and really did like it. It had a lot of romance, but I loved the art aspect and you should read it :D I need to read These Broken Stars soon too!
Great tag post thingy, Mel. xo

  7. My TBR list is a monster of about 800 books right now. So, I'll get back with you in...oh, I don't know...a few years and let you know how that's going! :D

A Harry Potter boxed set is quite a treat!

    As always
    Happy reading,

  8. I'm with you, I also don't feel like I truly own e-books. It's weird right?
Your digital ARC file looks so manageable! I wish I had better self control...

    1. Yes, perhaps because it's so untouchable? I display my books, I can touch them, but e-books are.. in the air? It's manageable for now, I never know what is going to happen in the future, hehe.

  9. Well you are better than me. I have 3045 books in my to-read shelf on goodreads. Also I own a large number of e-books compared to physical copies. This is mostly because most of the books I've enjoyed or want to read are not available in my country and international shipping is like twice the actual rate of the book.

  10. I read Dreaming Anastasia, I didn't hate it but it was really...boring. And as always your management skills rock! I just look at my tbr and pick randomly. I started making a list but I ended up disregarding it & went my old ways, haha. :P

  11. EEEK DANGEROUS GIRLS! I hope that one's a hit for you Mel. The suspense. It's an absolute favourite of mine, but something that can never be read again, tbh.

Your excel skills though. I'm in awe of all you who know your way around excel. I suck at it xD

    1. I can't wait! I suck at Excel too, but after messing with it you figure some things out, haha.

  12. I also added Ink and Rain by Amanda Sun to my wishlist because of their beautiful covers. They are indeed stunning! I also think it's funny you store some of your books at your boyfriend's house.

  13. Fun post! I can't believe I actually read all twelve books of the House of Night series... I'm also a mood reader so I try not to do any review copies, or not as much at least. I think if I were to make Excel sheets, it would become more of a job than a hobby, and I don't want to feel that way, because obligation, and mood reading and just... ack. But I really do get the appeal of scheduling.

How amazing do those Harry Potter books look?!

    1. THEY ARE GORGEOUS. Problem is that every box set is amazing and I want to get them all, haha.

  14. Amazing post Mel. <3 I also use Goodreads to know which books I own to read :D Because I own way too many, and looking at them all on my shelves would take forever, lol :p And yay for reading Antigoddess soon. <3 I hope you will love it :D Thank you for sharing sweetie. <3

  15. LOL I gave my copy of Marked and the other books from that series away because MAN, there are sooo many books in that series. I don't think I'm going to keep up! I also don't have time to read all those books. I also have Ink by Amanda Sun b/c of the pretty colors lol. I love the watercolor on the cover.

  16. I feel the same way that I don't really own my ebooks! And I also like to own the books I love but I sometimes take a gamble though in buying an ebook if I think I might not love the book enough to want to own it. Your excel sheet is awesome to keep yourself organized - it's something I would like to do, but I probably won't keep up with it. :)

  17. Thanks for sharing, Mel! I use Goodreads like a madwoman to keep my OCD brain happy. Love the shelf name for your TBR pile!
I'm in the camp that definitely recommends These Broken Stars! I think you'd really enjoy it. :)

  18. Only 343?! You're doing well. XD Omg, I am so bad that I have 700+ books on Goodreads that I'd like to read. Seriously. I just need a clone or something. There is soooo no one I am EVER going to keep up. *flails and flops*

    1. 343 TBR pile physical copies. My to-read list is.. enormous, haha.

      Delete
  19. Yay for being a mood reader! I pick in pretty much the same way, genre then individual book. Also, sticking to a review pile is so harddd. 343 isn't too bad! :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. So are the 343 ones that you own, or just TBR in general? I own about the same, if so, and I feel like you and I could form a support group. If it is in general on Goodreads... well, I have over a thousand, so you are doing quite well! I am a mood reader too, it is hard, because I know there are books I should be reading, but the mood strikes when it strikes ;)

Also, I think it is too funny that you own the 23rd book in a series and not the rest! Love this list, and how organized you are! Well done!

    1. Thanks for that question, I clarified it in my post now! My owned books :)

  21. I think I have 50 or so unread physical books but that's already so much to me haha! 300+ is both amazing and crazy at the same time. ;)
The amount of unread e-books I have is just crazy though. Sometimes I justify buying them because they're cheaper than physical books but then I never end up reading them. ><

    1. Sometimes it feels great to have so many books - and to know I'll never run out of reading materials. Sometimes it's overwhelming.

  22. I want to read Fairest so bad! I must know why Levana is such a crazy psycho! THERE HAS TO BE A REASON

    ReplyDelete
  23. I don't really count ebooks as owned either. I often forget I even have them. The only reason I would ever prefer to read an ebook over a physical copy is because its so much easier for me to keep track of quotes/moments I like because I can just underline/highlight it while reading. But otherwise... And I already adopted your spreadsheets for keeping track of what I read and review copies but I might add another for not-yet-released books - that's a good idea! :)

    1. Yes, that's practically the only reason I like e-books (and the fact I can have 1000 of them and my e-reader is still light :p)

      Delete
  24. Great post! As someone who primarily reads ebooks, I do consider them owned. I will disagree with you on that one. :)

  25. Love these types of posts so I'm glad you participated! I loved seeing your answers and of course, you always inspire me with you mad Excel skills :D LOL I had a copy of Marked too but I doubt I'll ever read it >.< I hope you love Dreamer's Pool, A School for Good and Evil and Anti Goddess Mel - happy reading xx

    ReplyDelete
  26. I have my TBR shelves split up, too! I'm glad I'm not the only one. My Goodreads-issued tbr shelf is full of the books I have in my possession and can read at any time, whereas the other shelves allow me to break them up and make them manageable. I HATED having one shelf for everything because it made it hard to pick and choose what I was in the mood for!

Right now I have 670 books in my tbr combined. *cries* Most of those I'll probably never read or don't plan to get to any time soon, but I'm too lazy to go through each shelf and decide what I want and don't. One day, but not today.

LOL I love that you keep spreadsheets! I started doing that at one point but never kept up with it.

    1. I always thought I wouldn't be able to keep up with it, but I am addicted to those spreadsheets now.

  27. Dangerous Girls! Dreamer's Pool! My, what a great method you have. I have "owned-but-not-read-yet" except sometimes I'm just plain terrible at remembering to uncheck that when I'm done reading (and then also don't mark that I own said book later lol).

"E-books also don't end up on my 'owned' list, because I don't feel I truly own them. Does that make any sense?" -- I sort of agree. I mean, with the Gutenberg Project, I have a bunch of ebooks that I technically "own" but it's not really me. It's the public access. Though I'd say I have about equal phys and ebooks to get through on the TBR :(.

How do you check which book has been on your TBR the longest? Because technically if it's what's ranked #1 on mine, it'd be like Forever by Maggie Stiefvater or something by Cassandra Clare, when I sort of even wonder at those books being on my list lol.

The Amanda Sun book covers are AMAZING.

"To be honest, there are several books that I never plan to read. I gave a lot of them away already, because my book taste has changed over time." -- STORY OF MY LIFE. Except I think you actually cleared out your GR to-read list and mine is still from like freshman year college or whenever I joined the site lol.

And I bet if you hadn't already read ACOTAR, that would've been the unpublished book you chose :P. Also, I'm not sure These Broken Stars is a Mel book. I bet you have gotten it recc'd to you a bunch, but I have a feeling you might not like it, specifically certain aspects. It's true I might be biased since I'm not one of the people who looooves it, but I feel like I might be better at identifying Mel books now, and that may not be one :P. You'll have to let me know if I'm right!
