Yearly recap 2014.

Personal (1)Okay, a warning: this is going to be long! You can always skip to the things you are interested in, but I’m going to start with a personal recap and end with a Reading statistics recap. This year I decided to use Excel and work with some graphics to challenge myself.

Every year always has it’s ups and downs, but I’m glad I can look back at all the amazing things I’ve done in 2014. I created many beautiful memories with friends and loved ones and I’ve had new opportunities when it came to blogging. I feel like this is the year where I've grown the most so far. I see my own development and that is a good thing. I've grown more comfortable with myself and I no longer let things that scare me hold me back. Here is a round-up for some of my 2014 highlights!

Edit: I deleted all the pictures.

I had awesome book club meetings with Debby, Daisy and Daph - and they get more fun each time. I celebrated my birthday together with my sister where we both cut our hair off to donate it. I joined the gym after my failed attempts to run. I finished my minor in Infection diseases, which resulted in getting all the required points for that school year. I found my current internship and a place for my diagnostic internship. I had to overcome a lot of anxiety and stressful situations, but I’m proud how I’ve dealt with them. Like, I conquered my fear for telephony by doing a telephonic interview and I had to meet a lot of new people.

I celebrated my 6-years together with my wonderful boyfriend. I had a fish spa with my sister and Prison Break/Game of thrones watch-a-thons with her and some friends. I saw many movies in the cinema with different people. I went to a music festival in my city. I went 3x to a hotel for a weekend away with my boyfriend. I had lots of diners in restaurants for several festive occasions, like my parent’s 25th-anniversary. We also had a photoshoot.

Fish spa, it tickles. A picture from the photoshoot from me & my dad and a picture from the camping adventure.

I had a high tea, celebrated a lot of birthdays and went on little trips (like reading in the park) and shopping quite often. I had a camping trip with my boyfriend, we celebrated Halloween in a theme park and I met up with Judith, Amber and Rinn! I celebrated Sinterklaas and Christmas, where I got to spend time with my loved ones and share presents. And of course, New Year’s eve!

High tea, it was delicious! Nice, sunny days in the park and the three amazing girls. They are pretty!

I had my second blogoversary and I made new publisher contacts. I got invited for my first blog tour by a publisher, I joined the blog tour for Throne of glass and I had my first author interview. I also got spotlighted on the HarperCollins website with my review for The queen of the Tearling. I gained a lot of new followers; thank you all for the lovely comments and support all the time. I also feel spoiled by all my amazing (blogging)friends and I can’t wait to get to know all of you even better in 2015!

I also can’t wait to see what is going to happen in 2015. It promises to be an exciting year with some changes and I’m sure I will make a lot of new, beautiful memories. I can't wait to keep challenging & pushing myself to do new things. Let’s rock and make 2015 an awesome (book) year!  How was your 2014? Definitely share some of your personal highlights in the comments.
Personal (2)I read a total of 155 books (+ 1 alternate ending) and 56.954 pages. If you want to see a list of all the books I’ve read this year with ratings, you can click right here: reading list 2014. I also managed to complete all my reading challenges! If you want a list and details, you can click right here: reading challenges 2014.

Naamloos

Now comes the part I always LOVE to see on other blogs and I thought I should give it a shot. Especially after seeing Debby's masterskills. I made an Excel file where I included all sorts of data. I bundled this information into reading stats.

image
Not too bad. I read 110 books that are part of a series. I finished 17 series and I started 48 (in comparison with last year: finished 13, started 46) 45 stand-alones, which is more than I thought. It seems almost every book nowadays is part of a series. 45 books were debuts. I’m pleased that I read 65 physical books! I got 94 new books, 40 were presents.

The most books I read where in the ‘okay’ rating (3 stars), but I also managed to read a lot of good books and I even gained 47 books in the favorite category. From there I made a top 15 books I would recommend to everyone:

 Favourites top 15:
1. Rosamund Hodge – Cruel beauty.
2. A.C Gaughen – Lady thief.
3. Robin LaFevers – Mortal heart.
4. Sarah J. Maas – Heir of fire.
5. Rae Carson – The bitter kingdom.
6. Laini Taylor – Days of blood and starlight.
7. Maggie Stiefvater – The dream thieves.
8. Anne Blankman – Prisoner of night and fog.
9. M.R Carey – The girl with all the gifts.
10. Cat Winters – In the shadow of blackbirds.
11. Heidi Schulz – Hook’s revenge.
12. Elizabeth May – The falconer.
13. Mira Grant – Feed.
14. Danielle L. Jensen – Stolen songbird.
15. Cammie McGovern – Say what you will.

My re-reads.
1. A.C Gaughen – Scarlet.
2. Veronica Roth – Divergent & Insurgent.
3. Sarah J. Maas – The assassin’s blade & Crown of midnight.
4. Rae Carson – The girl of fire and thorns & Crown of Embers.
5. Laini Taylor – Shadow and bone & Siege and storm.
6. Robin LaFevers – Grave Mercy & Dark triumph.
7. Laini Taylor – Daughter of smoke and bone.

The 5 worst books.
1. Ruth Warburton – Witch finder.
2. Rick Yancey – The 5th wave.
3. Amelia Howard – The almost girl.
4. Katherine Ewell – Dear killer.
5. Alex Mallory – Wild.

DNF.
1. Ilsa J. Bick - White Space.
2. Stephenie Meyer - The host.
3. Joshua McCune - Talker 25.
4. Amanda Maciel - Tease.
5. Cara Lynn Schultz - The dark world.
6. Kate Quinn - (Don't you) forget about me.
7. Lisa Jensen - Alias Hook.
8. Andrea Porter - Anatomy of a misfit.
9. Anna Carey - Blackbird.
10. Jaye Robin Brown – No place to fall.

genres
I’m not surprised by these results. Fantasy and fairytales are my most read-genres. I’m quite pleased I read 2 classics, because it has been a while since I read those. I didn’t realize I read 10 contemporaries, even more than historical!

Publisheryear

I was too lazy to put all the years into the right order, but it’s easy to see that I read a lot of books published in 2014. I’m not surprised that Harper is my most-read publisher. I work together with them and I always have downloading sprees on Edelweiss. It’s a shame that Strange Chemistry is gone, because I loved their work (were part of Angry Robots)

That’s it! I tried to make more graphs, but I seriously dislike to do that in Excel and it reminds me of my hated subject math. Let me know about your reading year! How many books did you read and which ones would you recommend to me?

  1. Wow, 6 years? You and your boyfriend have been dating for a long time! And your dad looks like a very fun guy :D

We also have fish spa over here! It was funny at first -- the fish stinging my legs -- but gradually I didn't feel anything. Fish spa used to be so much more common. I could see it in almost every mall and we have plenty of malls in my city. Unfortunately, these past couple of years, they started closing down one by one so I don't find a lot of them anymore.

It looks like you were able to meet up with many bloggers last year! It is always fun hanging out with fellow bookworms -- I hope this year will the same as well! ^^ It's too bad that I don't know any book bloggers who live in the same city as I do.

  2. Mel it sounds like you had an amazing 2014 with a lot of wonderful memories, and it sounds like you gained more confidence too! I'm so proud of you. I'm SO EXCITED to see Feed in your top 15 books, I love it so much and wish everyone else would read it too! Cruel Beauty was also incredible. Your signed SJMaas looks completely amazing too!

Happy New Year and I hope the next is even better for you.

  3. I LOVE your statistics! Like you, I like looking at numbers like these! I always try to find inspiration for my next spreadsheets. Now I want to add publishers to mine to see what's the one I read the most books from (I think it could be Harper too)

I totally agree with Dear Killer being one of the worst book of 2014! :D
You have a few favorites on your list that I haven't read yet! I should move them to the top of my wishlist.

  4. Happy 2015, Mel! I hope this year is much more awesome for than 2014. =D

Yay, that is great about being spotlighted on HarperCollins website!

Those stats are awesome! I also hate math but I do want to get more into statistics because I love them. I'm going to be using Google Sheets this year a lot for that reason. I hope I like it and stick to it.

  5. Looks like you had a great year! I'm also going to keeping track of the books I read this year in a spreadsheet as I love looking at other bloggers' statistics. Congrats on 6 years with your boyfriend, that's great!

It's also fantastic that you became more confident this year! <3 I want to focus on becoming more confident this year, as well as to stop worrying and to control my panic attacks.

    Hope you have a lovely 2015! <3

  6. Woohoo look at your 2014! I hope 2015 treats you even better! :)

Look at all that food you consumed and that photoshoot sounded like so much fun! And yay! Overcoming your fear of telephony was fantastic! It feels great when you squash things that hold back, right?

AND YAY! Look at your reading year! That's pretty amazing. I'm kind of in awe because your excel skills are amazing. I loathed it when school made me touch excel. My maths is also kind of horrendous so hahaha no way am I touching that. BUT I loved taking a peak at your year!

  7. Okay, first things first, HOLY SHIZNITS O_O You're so organized and so neat in putting information of your reading adventure and I'm like... cowering in shame because I can never dream to have that amount of patience and dedication. I applaud you, girl. Seriously, I do. I took the first step of being organized by scheduling my posts now in advance now, but that's still a struggle for me because I procrastinate a lot. Hopefully this step will jumpstart a better blogger in me HAHA.

In any case, I'm so happy that you've had such a productive 2014, not only in your personal life but in your blogging career as well!! I wish I could brag of the same successes, but alas, I'll just hope that 2015 will be a better year for me ;)

    Congrats girl! Happy New Year!

I’m so happy for you and what you accomplished last year. And also I’m grateful that you helped me to obtain my very first print ARCs, like seriously thanks for that! 9. Wow! What an amazing year you've had! I hope that your 2015 is even more amazing!
For me, last year, I visited Hong Kong for the first time ever! Amazing place! So much good food! I also finally realised the importance of health and that I should get moving. I joined the gym and started adopting healthier habits. I'm proud to say that I've lost about 2 kg and have 8 kg more to lose to reach my target weight :)
Your statistics excel is amazing! I so want to do something like that but I'm daunted by the effort involved! How do you do it? Do you record each time you finish the book? Or do you record at the end of the year? Would love to hear how you do it :)

    1. Congratulations with losing that weight! Good job :D

I use that little table with stats and ratings for every month & at the end of the year I count everything together :) The same with the publisher & year, I edit it at the end of every month.

  10. OH Mel, you had an amazing year!!! I just realized that we had two of the same worst books, Witch Finder & Dear Killer (that interested me for some reason haha). I loved that you put everything into Excel! Excel is my favorite thing that's computer related haha so I'm constantly playing around in it and I love seeing how others organize things in Excel :)

  13. OOH. So many amazing books! And so awesome you had such a lot of 5-star reads! HUZZAH! I think 3-stars was my biggest for last year too, and it's shaping up to be a consistent in 2015. ergh. -_- I've only read 3-star books so far this year. BUT THIS WILL CHANGE! I plan to read more older books this year, because I'm totally missing out on some gems. And more fairy tales. ;-) I mean, yes I signed up to the challenge with the intentions of Big Bad Wolf but I could totally handle being a Bluebeard. XD lol

  15. I found my publication years really interesting. I read 21 new releases for 2014, which is a lot for me, but I feel like I didn't even scratch the surface of all the 2014 releases I wanted to read. I also see a lot of 2013 releases still popping up this year for myself. I love tracking the statistics. I always love seeing everybody elses also. I read 70 books this year, which was a great accomplishment.

I love all the love you have for Heir of Fire, Dream Thieves & Days of Blood & Starlight -and I share that love x infinity ♥♥♥ And I'll be reading Fire and Thorns, Cruel Beauty, Scarlet, The Falconer and Stolen Songbird this year- so we'll have more to fangirl about XD

I'm glad that I have Goodreads that keeps track of my ratings for me. Harper is probably my most read publisher too, I have those downloading sprees every month, although I'm trying to be more selective this year :)

  28. Your 2014 has been a HUGE year, Mel! I'm glad you can look back on it positively, because it seems like you did some pretty amazing things.

As for the fish spa, I don't think I could do that XD I have a bit of a phobia about having creatures on me (which doesn't really make sense, being a wildlife biologist and all), but the thought of fishes on my skin makes me squeal.

I'm so glad The Falconer is on your favourites list! I read it in 2013 and I absolutely adored EVERYTHING about it, and I cannot wait for the sequel.

  30. It seems you had some heck of a year. I loved how you highlighted it was the year you've grown the most. Sometimes we do have those kinds of years, and it is great to acknowledge them so we don't forget the lessons learned. I also loved the stats regarding the year of publishing of the books you read. 32. I agree with Danielle -- you're so pretty, Mel! <3 And it looks like 2014 was an awesome year for you, too. I said this in a previous comment, but you're seriously lucky to have gotten to meet up with other book bloggers. I don't know if I'm the only book blogger in the country, but so far I haven't met another blogger from Malaysia for sure.

And wow, congrats on getting spotlighted on the HC website! That's definitely a feat to be proud of since you're basically famous now! ;D I'm still waiting for the day when one of my reviews might get featured in a book or something, lol. And eeeep, you got to meet Sarah J. Maas?? JEALOUS. Okay, I've only read one book by her, and that was Throne of Glass, but I'm hoping to get to Crown of Midnight soon and I know I'll just love it. It would be awesome if I got to meet her in the future!

Ugh, my Goodreads reading challenge was such a fail. I set my goal to 50 books only, because I was in a reading slump and knew I wouldn't make it past that number, but I still failed anyway and read only 27 books. /embarrassed 155 books in a year is an amazing achievement! I'm looking through your DNF list and realizing that The Host is on there. :( I actually really liked The Host, even though it was fairly romance heavy, but I guess I can see why others wouldn't enjoy it as much. The film was pretty okay too, in my opinion.

Well, here's to another fabulous year for all of us! <3 :D

YES, 2015 is going to be awesome! <3

  34. "I've grown more comfortable with myself and I no longer let things that scare me hold me back." -- Me too! I've always heard you get more confident and comfortable as the years go on, but I guess I never believed it until I started feeling it.

Your hair is so beautiful, long or short. I donated back in my senior year of high school -- feels good, right? And good for you at joining the gym! I did and was going for a while until it got too cold to get out. Congrats on the minor and your diagnostic internship! (I'll hold back on current internship, since I know that's frustrating you). Telephone interviews are SO bad. Like my least favorite too - in person or vidchat at least let you read each other's facial expressions. Congrats on conquering that fear and your 6 year anniversary for your bf :D. The photoshoot with you and your dad is adorable. Also I love that dress, its color. And it looks good on you :)

SO MANY MOMENTS this year for you! So awesome Mel! Getting spotlighted sounds so cool :D. I never knew that could even happen, and I'm so happy for you and your blog's success. You're such an awesome friend and commenter - of course this would happen :).

155 BOOKS. NIIICE. All these reading stats make me think I ought to count my number too, even though I promised myself not to do that and think too much about the number. You've done a lot of reading recaps too - the list and the challenges and these stats? Wowza, you are on point! I especially like that you read more e-books and owned physicals than eARCs and ARCs. I don't think I could say that of myself and I hope to change that this year!

AH, you ended up reading and liking Feed, huh? I liked it until I read this thing about Shaun and Georgia and now it makes me feel weird when I think of the book :/. HUZZAH FOR Rosamund Hodge, Robin LaFevers, Sarah J. Maas, Laini Taylor, Maggie Stiefvater -- we really do have similar tastes. So many of your faves are fantasy! (mine too). "I’m not surprised that Harper is my most-read publisher. I work together with them and I always have downloading sprees on Edelweiss." -- Me too. Maybe I should stop signing into Edelweiss. Also, you read a lot of 2014 books, but combine 2014 and 2015 and you're still not at half your read books! How fantastic! I feel like everything I've read has been published recently. You've done such a good job managing your reads!

Go, Mel :). And Happy New Year!

    1. YEAY, another long Christina comment, my favorites :)

Definitely, people always told me 'it will change, believe me.' But I always shrugged it away. Now I can see the evidence and it seems they are right after all.

It felt GREAT to donate my hair. Not only did I lose a lot of weight on my head, I also could mean something to someone else :) I'm also in love with that blue dress, it's so cute.

I still can't believe I was spotlighted. A great achievement I'll always remember. You are a great friend too Christina :) I hope to read even more TBR pile books in comparison with this year.I need to cut down on unread books.

I was surprised by Feed. The initial slow start made me a bit wary, but at a certain point I was sucked into the story. We both have a great reading taste ;)

  36. Happy new year! :) This was a really fun post to read, it's made me regret not doing my own recap of 2014. You've definitely inspired me to keep track and do that next year. I am also amazed by the Excel spreadsheet. I have never thought of doing that but now I really want to, it's a great way to keep track of my stats. What information did you put into it? I can't read them haha.
