TTT 41. For readers who like to find new favorite books.

Let’s forget the most obvious one: J.K Rowling – Harry Potter. I tried to focus on books I see myself re-reading over and over again; the books on my ultimate favorite list. I hope I can help you find some to add to your list too!

There she is again. I’ve been in love with Juliet Marillier’s books for years now. This story has a special place in my heart, because Daughter of the forest is the first book I read by her. I am actually re-reading this series this year, so I can finally post my reviews for it. Her books always have an amazing cast with strong female protagonists, interesting love-interested and the atmosphere is magical.

This is also a book you should be familiar with. I always try to spread my love for Markus Zusak – The book thief. His writing-style is gorgeous, the POV is unique and the story always makes me cry. Set in World War 2, you follow the story of Liesel, a girl who likes to steal books.

If you have to ask me one of my favorite fairytales I will immediately think about Jodi Lynn AndersonTiger Lily. The storytelling is beautiful and this is also one of the few books that can make me shed some tears.

Robin LaFevers is a genius and I feel a lot of love for this series. I even forced it upon my book club members (with success) and I will always adore all the characters she created. Dark Triumph is my favorite installment though, because of how broken and flawed Sybella is – yet deadly and you better not underestimate her. Her relationship is my ultimate OTP. Plus, nun assassins.

Rae Carson – The bitter kingdom is the last book in the girl of fire and thorns series and it’s by far my favorite book in the series. I love the character development and relationship between Elisa and her lover.

This is another fairytale I will think of if you ask my favorite retelling. Rosamund Hodge – Cruel beauty has an AMAZING world-building, where she uses mythology to create one of the most unique retellings of Beauty and the beast. You definitely need to meet the flawed, dark MC.

Lady Thief by A.C Gaughen is another fairytale retelling (if you are surprised I have so many of these on my lists you are clearly a new follower, haha) I love Scarlet and her sassy mouth and spunk. She doesn’t take crap from anyone, but she also has a certain vulnerability.

The dream thieves by Maggie Stiefvater was simply the best. The diverse cast has captured my heart. Bad-ass Blue and her friendship with The raven boys; I can’t get enough of them.

And of course, Scarlet by Marissa Meyer. This is the best book in the series if you ask me. I loved the story and the fact that we got to meet Scarlet, Wolfe and Thorne.

  2. *hugs this list* So many of these are already my favourites...your choices are just PERFECTION. I'm finally going to read The Messenger by Markus Zusak because I loved The Book Thief so so much I'm honestly on withdrawal from his amazing writing. :')

  3. I have the first Grave Mercy book on my shelf but for some reason I always skip over it, but SO MANY people recommend it that I really need to get around to it soon! I always try to put Cruel Beauty on my TTT lists because I think it's SUCH a well written book, love that it's so dark, and I feel like hardly any bloggers I know have read it!

    Great list this week!

  4. Tigerlily is so beautiful, but so so underated. It's the best Peter Pan retelling I've ever read (well... It's the ONLY Peter Pan retelling I've ever read!)! And Scarlet is DEFINITELY worth a read... It made me fall in love with the Lunar Chronicles (and Wolf, let's be honest).

  9. *nods* I highly approve of this list. I read a lot of historical fiction, and The Book Thief is definitely one of the best historical fiction books I've ever read with its beautiful storytelling and breath taking writing. Yay for another person that thinks Scarlet is the best in the series! I really loved how it blended elements of both The Little Red Riding Hood and The Beauty and the Beast. Great list, Mel!

  17. Sigh, love. <3 Such gorgeous books. Amazing post Mel :D Thank you so much for sharing your awesome list. I have read a lot of these :D But still some I want to read ;p Like The Book Thief. But worried, as the movie was great, but also a bit boring for a long time :\ I think Tiger Lily is so pretty. But I'm not sure I could handle it. Sad ending. Maybe not for me :( But yeah. You have made me curious about Juliet Marillier :D One day. <3

  19. I'm a new follower of your blog, but I have to comment on this post because I agree with so much of what you said!

First of all, a million times YES to Juliet Marillier. I've loved (almost) all of her novels, but Daughter of the Forest was also the first one I read, and I agree that it's the best. SO MANY FEELS. My heart still breaks for Simon every time I read it. I'm glad it made your list, because it doesn't get nearly enough attention in the blogosphere.

Dark Triumph, Heir of Fire, Bitter Kingdoms, and The Dream Thieves are all favorites-in-the-series as well, and they took my love of the series to the next level.

I haven't read Tiger Lily yet, but you've inspired me to add it to my TBR list. Thanks!

I'm so glad you loved Bitter Kingdom, I have the first book and can't wait to start it. I still need to read Dream Thieves, I'm glad it fits as a favorite :) Lovely picks, Mel <33

  22. It's so exciting to see I've read (and gave 5 stars to) all of these except three which I haven't been able to read yet! You obviously have great taste in books, Mel ;)

I haven't started the Girl of Fire and Thorns series (yet, I have the first book on the TBR), Tiger Lily (also on my TBR), or Lady Thief (which my buying ban is preventing me from getting). I can't wait to read them and probably also give them high ratings XD

  23. Nice picks! I have read The Book Thief and absolutely loved it - written so well and that was what I call a brilliant use of metaphors. I have quite a few of these on my TBR as well because I have seen them around and they sound promising :3

  28. So I loved all of these except for the two I haven't read - Daughter of the Forest and The Bitter Kingdom. Maybe this is the year to finally continue in the Girl of Fire and Thorns series... we shall see. But when do you plan on doing your re-read of Daughter of the Forest? Maybe I can re along with you (although it will be my first time)!

  30. TIGER FUCKING LILY. YES. I need to read this story. I have the book, so I am all set. Yes to Rae Carson. Great choices, Mel.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I absolutely agree with many of this.

Tiger Lily - I LOVED this book. It was so refreshing, and so surreal and tragic and bittersweet at the same time. It made me hate Wendy somehow lol

Heir of Fire - BASICALLY THE WHOLE SERIES IS LOVE. Took me some time to warm up to Celaena, but by the third installment, she was one bad-ass chick.

Bitter Kingdom - one of those YA Fantasy series that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone. Lovely heroine, lovely plot, lovely natural romance progression... so much win.

Scarlet - MARISSA MEYER. AND AWESOME SCI-FI RETELLINGS THAT SPAN MULTIPLE FAIRYTALES. WHAT IS THERE NOT TO LOVE?!?!

  34. I love the books you've recommended Mel, as a lot of them I've just recently decided to give another go, books such as Scarlet and The Dream Thieves, so I really hope that I end up enjoying them just as much as you did! :)

  35. I love your TTT topic pick this week! I probably should have dismissed the obvious (HP) for my list too but I can never quite seem to avoid giving the series a shout out ;) In any case, I ADORE so many of the books you picked here: Heir of Fire ♥ Dream Thieves ♥ Scarlet...all favorite series' of mine :D As for the rest, most are one's I've been meaning to read for as long as I can remember: Tiger Lily, Dark Triumph, Daughter of the Forest, The Book Thief, Scarlet, Girl of Fire and Thorns and Cruel Beauty. I must say that most of Marillier's books are on my tbr shelf but your love for her and her writing is really tempting me to get caught up on ALL of the already!! Wonderful list^^ xx

I haven't ready ANY of these titles! After "Crimson Bound" I'm not all that interested in Cruel Beauty, unfortunately, but the others do seem interesting.

  38. kind of sad that there's not a single pure contemporary book on here T_T but still so many epic books! I love the raven cycle and his fair assassin books (i'm reading Mortal Heart right now). I still need to get my hands on Tiger Lily because I know how much you love it!

  40. Mel. I completely agree with Cruel Beauty! It was an unexpectedly beautiful book and for that I'm glad! In the Lunar Chronicles though, I still believe that Cinder was the best book, and then Scarlet, but then Winter hasn't come out yet, and I'm currently reading Fairest, so we shall see. :)

  41. SJ MAAS. THE DREAM THIEVES. MY HEART.

I can definitely say The Dream Thieves was my favorite Raven Cycle book with Blue Lily, Lily Blue coming in close second. I cannot wait to re-read this series (and Throne of Glass!) but I'm putting it off until closer to the release of The Raven King because I JUST finished them. c: Same with Throne of Glass -- I want everything fresh in my mind come the release of Queen of Shadows.

There are so many books on this list I want to read. I read Juliet Marillier's Wildwood Dancing last year and LOVED it, so I really want to pick up the rest of her books. :P

    1. I'm also re-reading HOF close to Queen of Shadows as preparation :D

  42. I can wholeheartedly agree with the Raven Cycle books, Throne of Glass, Cruel Beauty, Book Thief. There are a few I really want to read here too, including the assassin nuns (Grave Mercy) and Scarlet. So many awesome recommendations here!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I love Cruel Beauty and Scarlet, too! They're two of my all time favorite books. I'm excited to continue on with the Throne of Glass series. I've heard the series just gets better and I'm glad that you enjoyed Heir of Fire so much :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. I sadly still have to read Harry Potter -runs away and hides from the mob-, The Book Thief, and the Grave Mercy trilogy. I know, I know, I totally need to catch up on everything.
I am planning on starting Rae Carson's books soon though, especially since I've heard nothing but great things about the last two books in the trilogy! :D

    ReplyDelete
  45. I really need to get around to reading Juliet Marillier's books! Looks like so many awesome books to read! Do you think I should start with the Sevenwaters series? That seems to be the most popular series.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I've only read half of the books on your list, but I would totally recommend them to everyone - especially The Book Thief, Heir of Fire and Tiger Lily! I really need to continue with Robin LaFevers series and also start Rae Carsons!
    Great list :D

    ReplyDelete
  47. Ah, gosh, I need to retry The Book Thief again (did I tell you about how the first time, I was just taken aback by the writing style and voice and bored? Maybe I wasn't in the proper mood). And literally any time I'm in the book store and see a Juliet Marillier book, I think of you actually haha. I think I was in a B&N and saw the Dreamer's Pool. I was like, I should get it. I should FINALLY read one of these books and get around to talking about it to Mel!

Mel, I'm so disappointed in myself. I sent you Mortal Heart and then was like ooo I want to read it because this girl at book club was raving about how it's the best of the series and then it's still on my shelf. it should be one of the first ones I read o.o when my review book reviews end (NO MORE SCHEDULED POSTS NOOOOoooooooooooooooo). Anyway - Sybella is your favorite? ANd hahah I didn't know you'd forced it on your book club! I hope they enjoyed it!

Oh, and finally reading the rest of the Girl of Fire and THorns trilogy. (There are SO many series I still haven't finished. ARGH ARGH ARGH).

YAY CRUEL BEAUTY LOVE!!! YAY RAVEN BOYS LOVE!! Lady Thief was a really nice novel and I say that without STILL having read the first book (it's another tbr.... hahaha).

(side note: you included the pic of Heir of Fire but didn't rave about one of your fave authors SJ Maas? WHUUUUUUT ;)).
