Monthly recap | June '15. Graduation!

recap
This post recaps my month, from personal life to books I’ve read & bought, movies and TV shows I’ve seen and links to posts that interest me.
OUAT1
A lot of exciting things happened this month, with as highlight: I AM GRADUATING. I got my last grade (8 out of 10 for my internship) and I will receive my Bachelor of applied science somewhere in September. It is really strange that, after four years of hard work, it is all over now. I got some awesome compliments during my last review and it was nice to hear they were so happy with me. If there was a budget they would have hired me. There is still a small chance though *fingers crossed* Today was my last day and I’m sad to go. I feel a little emotional right now, but I am also happy to have some well deserved vacation time.

If you are interested in what I am going to do with my diploma: there are several titles for my job, but I think you call it a Medical technologist, in my case specialised in Microbiology. If you don’t know what that means, in short: There are different types of microbiology laboratories like in a hospital or food industry. My job is to detect en identify infections from (patient) specimens, which can be from all kinds of materials. I determine from the samples if particular microbes are present, like pathogen bacteria or fungi. I have a video to give you some examples. She doesn’t speak with much enthusiasm, but this will give you a general idea: Overview of a microbiology lab. I think I have a wonderful job with very challenging cases.

And that brings me to the next topic: I was invited for two job interviews! I sent out two applications: one to an Academic hospital and one to a public health care laboratory. It’s hard to find a job because there is a lot of cuts in my section lately, so imagine my surprise when they both replied! I had my first interview yesterday and I found out that the place just isn’t my thing, but it was a good experience and I’m happy I gave it a shot. I really want to work in a hospital, so wish me luck this Friday!

imageOther memorable moments: I went to the park every sunny day with some colleagues to get a tan, we ate ice cream provided by the microbiologists, I went to the beach with my boyfriend, I went to diner for my Mother’s birthday and my parent’s anniversary. I had a diner with my sister at a World restaurant. Very cool concept. There are chefs from different specialisms, so you can order all kinds of food: from sushi to fast-food. It was very tasty. We ordered Chinese for my dad’s birthday, sushi to celebrate my graduation, I went to a home-made market and I had a shopping trip with my mom and sister. I had a fun book club meeting where we mainly raved about movies and TV shows. I went to the beach with my boyfriend, sister and her boyfriend. And, my Kobo Glo HD and new case arrived. I am still testing it out (spoiler: I LOVE IT), but keep an eye out for my review.

It was a good month.

MOVIES:
1. Tinkerbell and the legend of the Neverbeast. Loved it. There is a great message in these movies and I will be writing a more detailed post about them. After Pirate fairy my favorite instalment.
2. Dracula untold. For the second time. I like the twist around his character.
3. Pompeii. How disappointing. Sappy, unrealistic romance and clich├ęs. I did like the look from the volcano eruption.

TV-SHOWS:
I finished the first and second season from Ripper Street and I’m in love. Good actors. Good solid episodes with interesting story lines. And it’s not only about solving a crime, there are also personal problems that make it easy to get attached to the characters. Plus, I love the addition of the old fashioned way of pathology.
Finale of Game of thrones and NO. NO. NO.
I started Vikings and finished the first season. This TV show and it’s better than I expected. There is a kick-ass woman I really appreciate:
I also started Orange is the new black and I got HOOKED. Man, what a fantastic show. I binge-watched the first season.
I finally watched the first episode from Grimm and it looks promising.
I finished the second season from Ripper street. Good series.
Book haul
My package from Alexia came in the mail. I won this awesome price package during the Love-a-thon a couple of months ago and I’m so thrilled to read these books. You can also see my copy from Susan Ee – End of days and a signed copy from A.C Gaughen – Unhinged which I won over at Iris.

I also treated myself with some of my most anticipated books. I got Valiant, The storyspinner, Lion heart and The wrath and the dawn. I also received my new undamaged copy from A court of thorns and roses.

I also got a surprise email from the publisher that they send me an eGalley through Edelweiss from Cat Winters – The Uninvited. Thank you so much HarperCollins!

I will be better next months. I promise. I’ve been saving up my money for my graduation present (more about that next month) and I have put myself on a book buying ban until the end of September. I will be strong!

This is something new I want to add to my monthly recaps. You can always find tons of links to interesting posts on Christina reads YA and I thought it would be fun to highlight some articles and news that interest me. It is divided in Whozits (random stuff with gadgets and gismos for YT and scientific articles) and Whatzits (bookish).I have been so busy this month, but I did stumble on these two interesting websites:

WHOZITS.
Potential new class of cancer drugs. It is aimed at the metabolism.
Really cool video which captures the death of a human white blood cell.
How was your month? Did you read/watch anything good?

  1. Oooh, it sounds like you had a great month Mel! Good luck for your interview on Friday! I really hope you get the job. World restaurants are my favourite. There's so much to choose from! I'll definitely be looking forward to your review of your Kobo, in case I ever want a change from Kindle.

I never got around to seeing Pompeii - I wanted to - but it doesn't really sound like it's worth watching. I still haven't watched the GoT finale, mostly because someone spoiled it for me and I can't bring myself to watch it now. OITNB is amaaaazing! I love it so much! Grimm is one of my favourite shows. I've been watching it since the beginning and it's fantastic. I hope you enjoy it!

You got some pretty awesome new books. The Storyspinner sounds really good! Happy reading, Mel :D

  3. WooHoo! Congrats on finally graduating Mel!! All that hard work paid off and you must be so proud. When I got my Bachelor's, I was almost in a daze. It's like you can't believe that all that studying and hard work is done for good! I'll be sending all the positive vibes your way for your interview tomorrow. I hope you get it! I already wanted to check out Orange is the New Black but now you've made me want to watch Ripper, Grimm and Vikings! You got lots of pretty books too and I hope you don't feel too bad about splurging. You deserve it ;) Happy reading! ♥

  10. Yay, so glad that you'll be graduating, Mel! And good luck for the job interviews! Hopefully we get to see more of you on Twitter now. Miss talking to you!

I really hope that you love The Wrath and the Dawn. Such an amazing book!

I watched season 3 of Orange is the New Black which I loved and glad to know that you also started watching it! I also watched iZombie which is surprisingly funny and oh, I'm halfway through the first season of Sense8 which I'm also loving.

Pompeii had been on my list of movies to watch but I've never gotten around to it. Sad to know that it's disappointing.

  11. Congrats girl!! Oh man, microbiology, sounds so hard so bravo for you! I have never been a fan of science ever since I took chemistry in high school and then AP biology (yuck) so I stayed away from them in college hehe. I'm so glad you liked Dracula Untold! It's such a good movie ^.^ I think I watched it 2 or 3 times. and wow that's lots of books! Happy reading :D

  12. Congrats on getting to graduate this year! Sounds like you had a nice internschip and that's great to hear they would've hired you if they had a budget. Every job interview is good practice and it's nice to know what you do and don't want to do. Sometimes the job descriptions beforehand can be a bit vague and then you only leanr what the job entails once you get the interview. I hate job interviews as they always make me very nervous. I wish you good luck with your job search!

Sounds like June was a fun month for you! That Kobo Glo case you got looks awesome! I might eventually upgrade to a Kobo glow as well, but as long as my Kobo touch worksI'll stay with this one. I hope July will be a great month as well!

My previous Kobo was also working, but this is just such a big step to new technology. I love it.

  14. I'm so happy for you, Mel! I'm always highly impressed by people who are majoring in cool sciences because I've never been good at it myself - so congrats!! And those job interviews: I wish you the best of luck. YOU GOT THIS <3 And ooh lala, that Kobo looks wonderful, I'm glad you're liking it a lot so far! I hope July is just as awesome as June was for you!

  15. CONGRATS MEL!!!

And yes, OITNB is AMAZING. I remember my husband was on a camping trip for the weekend and I finished all of season one. I still need to finish season two though and catch up with everyone else!

    Have a FABULOUS July!

  17. Congrats on graduating!!! I'm so proud of you. :D Also LOTS of luck on those job interviews, and here's to getting a job in your field! I know you'll do wonderful. ^^

I'm so happy to see you watching Vikings! I love that show. I didn't catch up with season 3 because I'm super lazy, but I did hear good things about it. I'll get around to it eventually. I LOVE Lagertha, though. I think she's one of the best characters on the show. Her strength and determination is amazing. She gets even better in season 2. ;D

At this point I'm more surprised when people AREN'T mad at Game of Thrones because it seems like everyone is yelling about this or that at the end of an episode. I do think a LOT of people will return for season 6 though. This show has a serious cult following, so I have a feeling lots of people who claim they won't watch will at least peak at the first episode of season 6.

So many books! Have fun with them. ;D Good luck on your book buying ban, too. I should really be on one but... I have almost no restraint. Working in a bookstore will do that to you, ha.

    1. Thank you, I hope it went okay! Lagertha is the best. I will definitely keep watching GOT. I love it, but damn that last episode.

And yay for getting so many awesome books :D I hope you'll love them all sweetie. <3 Yay for The Uninvited :D I loooved it. So curious to see what you think of it :) And ugh, Tinkerbell. <3 I adored Neverbeast oh so much. It is my favorite :) Then the pirate one, hih ;p Hope July will be amazing for you Mel. <3
