TRICK OR TREAT. My Halloween experience.

TRICK OR TREAT.
I bet you are here to look for my favorite sweet.
I hope the search is worth the price,
because further in this post

you might be up for a scary surprise.
(don’t say I didn’t warn you! If you don't like clowns, be prepared.)

This event is hosted by the great girls from Great Imaginations. Check out the kick-off post here! Basics: every blogger has hidden a candy in their post and at the end of the event, you need to collect these so you can enter the international giveaway.

Here in The Netherlands we don’t celebrate Halloween as national holiday, but it is starting to gain more popularity. Stores are slowly selling more candy with Halloween wrappers and also more people are buying clothes to dress up. I live in a big city and I don’t see many signs of Halloween here, but friends on my parents live in a village and it’s a big happening there.

For the past few years we’ve (successfully) celebrated Halloween. There is a special route set up for the children and every house in the neighborhood has the opportunity to pick something they want to do. Some give out hot chocolate milk or soup, some hand over candies right away or give fun attributes for children to wear. We always set up a whole haunted house with a different theme each year. Example is last year, where we dressed up as fairytale characters. I was a Zombie Cinderella. Unfortunately I can't show any photographs, because there are other people in there too and I need to respect their privacy.

This year will be based on clowns.

We always get loads of compliments from both children and parents. It’s funny how parents often tell us how scared they were, because we go all out. Karaoke music with scary sounds, bloody and messed up make-up, fittings outfits: we really try to take it to a new level. We also change the lay-out from the house every year, so people don’t grow used to the same pattern. Last year we made false tunnels with freaks in the dark at the end and tricky floors so they would pay more attention to walking and less on their surroundings. It definitely gave a lot of screams. When they finally finish the road they get to pick their treat.  (I always go for those mini Twix bars)

How do you celebrate Halloween?

(PS: I scared the crap out of myself looking for those gifs. I'm not really a fan of clowns to begin with and this.. *shivers*)

  3. OMG Mel this sounds amazing but I don't think I'd ever have the courage to put on a haunted house or to go through one lol. I am a HUGE scaredy cat and avoid all things horror related lol. And CLOWNS. *shudders*

  6. This sounds like tons of fun! (I didn't do anything, but I did notice as well that it's gaining more popularity slowly). I really REALLY hate clowns though... They're just creepy *shivers* but I would definitely be up for a haunted house! Even though I'd probably scream at every little thing haha.

  7. I dunno what it is about IT, but that clown doesn't actually scare me haha. It seems to make me laugh a little because it just looks so ridiculous hehe.

Wow, your haunted house sounds amazing Mel!! It's amazing how much effort you and your friends put into it. Australia doesn't really celebrate Halloween either, but there are more parties being held every year for it. We don't get many trick or treaters in my neighbourhood though.

It's such a cool holiday, I wish more happened in Australia around this time!

  9. Halloween sounds so much fun! We don't celebrate here in Australia, but I've often wondered how fun it would be to go all out and scare others. Those evil clowns are definitely scary lol! Your costumes sound great.
