Epic Recs. January.

epic recssssssssss
You might be familiar with this concept. It was created by Amber & Judith to push each other to read certain books. They’ve opened it up for other bloggers as well and I teamed up with Juhina who is the blogger of Maji Bookshelf. Our first month I read 'The unbecoming of Mara Dyer' and Juhina read as 2nd recommendation 'This song will save your life.'

My recommendation for her:Leigh Bardugo - Shadow and bone.
When I found out that she hasn't read this book yet, I knew right away that I would use it as my epic recs! This book has a mixture of everything: swoonworthy love-triangle (yes, they do excist), a kick-ass MC and a good world-building.

My recommendation from Juhina:
Stephenie Meyer - The host.
I'm nervous about this book. I didn't like Twilight (at all) and I've heard mixed things about this book. This is going to be interesting!

Have you read (one of) these books? What did you think?

  1. I'm a bit late on the bandwagon for both of these books but I'm getting onto Shadow & Bone soon! I've heard so much rave about it and now with the second book out, they're both climbing up my to-read list. As for The Host, I don't think I'll ever read it. I know it sounds like a cop out but IT'S SO LONGGG. And well, I could just uuh, watch the movie. I know! So bad of me! I really hope you enjoy it more than you did Twilight though!

    1. Haha, I accepted the challenge, but The host looks intimidating. I think I'm going to combine the book with the movie :) And yeay, can't wait for you to read Shadow and bone too!

  2. I haven't read Shadow and Bone either (don't kill me please) but I have read The Host and while it's not amazing it's so much better than Twilight. I just found everything about it SO much better than Twilight - the writing was better, the characters didn't annoy me as much, the world building was more interesting...I don't think you have much to worry about!

  3. I started The Host but to be honest I didn't make it that far! But to be fair, I was in a mood where I was in total Twilight overload with all the movie stuff everywhere so I maybe didn't give it a fair shot! Good luck with it!

    1. don't stop! i have to admit the first 80 pages or so dragged.. this book needs to come with a warning of its initial start.. after those 80 pages, you'll fly through it! - Juhina

  4. Saw The Host movie and it was ok but from what I've seen it was really bearable and really different from Twilight. :D

  7. I've been debating reading The Host. I've heard it's meant to be much better than Twilight.

  8. This sounds like such a great feature. I haven't seen this around much. But I think they are great recommendations. The Host didn't float my boat but I was always a fan of her Twilight series. (Not that I'm making it worse for you!) Shadow and Bone is Awesome so I hope Juhina enjoys it. Enjoy!

  9. "swoonworthy love-triangle (yes, they do excist), a kick-ass MC and a good world-building." -- I'm down with the last two and the first one? Well, I ain't gonna believe ya if I don't see it myself SOOOO I better get on this gorgeous paperback on my shelf, aye? ;) Heh.

As for your book, I haven't read The Host, but I kind of liked the movie, then again. It may have all been thanks to Max Irons and the ending. I mean.. Imagine Dragons and Radioactive. Hellllllls yeah. I hope you enjoy though--I have heard more good than bad about that book and I saw the video Juhina made where she mentioned what you guys were reading and she was really excited so for the both of your sakes, hah. I hope you enjoy and good luck! That's one big book :D

  10. I think my sister has read The Host and liked it. Yay for Shadow and Bone! Love that series =) I can't wait for the cover reveal of the last book. The author has seen it and hopefully it will be revealed soon =)

  11. YEAY! Have faith in my recommendations Mel :P Just give it time to get into the story. I'm sure you'll love it (it is completely different from Twilight.. it even seems like both books aren't written by the same author).

Hope you enjoy it! I'm reading Shadow & Bone after the book I am currently reading :D

  13. The Host is a million times better than Twilight! It's really easy to read (even though it's supposedly an Adult book, it kinda has a YA feel to it). I actually haven't read it since about 3 or 4 years ago though, so I can't say whether I'd still enjoy it lol

And HECK YES Shadow and Bone! Such a great rec :D :D

  14. The Host was such a pleasant surprise, Mel! I really enjoyed it, and was shocked that it was even by the same author as Twilight.

  15. YASSSSS, I hope you both love your recs! The Host was actually really good, and I enjoyed it a lot more than Twilight. There were some slow parts, and of course a love triangle, but other than that I thought it was excellent. Maybe because I love sci-fi xD

  16. Wow. I didn't know that there's a feature such as Epic Recs. That is wonderful and yet scary. I mean, you're really making an assertive action to make someone read a book that you're not sure if he/she will like it.

I've already read Shadow and Bone and while it's good, it wasn't that mindblowing for me. But still, it's a great pick. Haven't read the Host either. My experience with Twilight wasn't that good so...

  17. Only read Shadow and Bone, but such huge love for it. <3 One of the best books. I'm not sure if I even want to read The Host.. hih. But maybe one day :D Good luck Mel. <3

  18. Only read shadow and bone. A cute project

  19. So for The Host, be prepared for a slower read. It takes time to develop the story. But I think the ending was pretty good.

  20. Good for you for pushing Shadow and Bone! Everyone needs to read that book. EVERY. ONE.

I share your anxiety with The Host. I've heard people who've loved and people who loathed. I guess that's the beauty of Epic Recs, eh? Pushing you to read something you haven't already picked up on your own!

  21. I've read Shadow and Bone - nice rec though I felt book two was extremely similar to book 1. As for The Host - I have it but I don't plan to read it cause I didn't like Twilight either but a friend gave it to me so I feel bad about donating or giving it away. She loved it.

Its just so long and I didn't like her writing style in her twilight series so why would i like this one or want to spend my precious reading time reading it LOL.

  22. I'm so glad you are enjoying yourselves! :) Shadow and Bone is an AMAZING rec! Juhina, I hope that you will luuuurve it. As for the Host, it's definitely not comparable to Twilight. Personally, I didn't like it at all, but I know many people who do and I can see why. I hope you like it more than I did, Mel. :)
